15 August 2011:

Allen: Don't know if you're still looking for active nests (or if you saw my post), but I believe I've got one about 15 ft. up a tree - easily visible from my driveway with binocs. I'm sure even better with a scope (but I don't own one). The female is sitting there most of the time. I'm in Bloomfield Twp. Happy to give you more particulars if you're interested....It is out on a small limb in a Silver Maple.

[Name deleted] loaned me her scope this afternoon, so I was able to get a better look. Pretty sure there are no nestlings yet. The female appeared to be turning eggs (with her beak and her feet) when she returned to the nest and then settling down.

25 August 2011:

This morning, I definitely saw the female feeding someone - a tiny beak was visible (with that awesome scope) just above the nest edge. Fantastic! Allen Chartier was here yesterday to check on the late-in-the-season hummingbird nest in my backyard. He suggested I could hook a webcam up to [the] scope. Unfortunately, I have a very slow internet connection, and can't stream live. So, I've put a short video I took today up on youtube, showing the nest and the female returning to feed the chick(s). As of yesterday, Allen saw one hatchling and one egg. It's been windy, and thus hard to keep the nest in view.

26 August 2011:

After numerous additional technical challenges, I managed to get some even better video of the Ruby-throat feeding young in her nest. I would complain that I've accomplished nothing else today, but (as two people reminded me today) "When is *this* ever going to happen again?".

I can't tell if there are more than one tiny bird in the nest, can you?

27 August 2011:

I took lots of video today, but there was a persistent leaf in the way much of the time. So, I've opted to post just a short video which includes a feeding and a little footage of the mom interacting with an insect that happens by.

The wind and leaves cooperated today and I finally got video that shows TWO greedy baby hummers at feeding time!

This video is a bit long (around 3 min), but has some interesting stuff:

I thought you might enjoy seeing the female landing and taking off. For takeoff, she reminds me of a prop plane with the prop spinning before it can move.

I also managed to record two feedings and (amazingly enough) the rear end of a baby shooting poop out of the nest. There's also some good footage of Mother Hummer trying to get comfortable (think about sitting on those pointy beaks), and looking indignant at an annoying leaf.

It was windy part of the day, so the nest isn't always centered nicely on the screen (sorry!).

31 August 2011:

Today's video has a feeding, and some activity in the nest while Mother Hummer is away. You can see how much the nestlings are growing!

01 September 2011:

I'm really excited that Mother Hummer decided to give us a profile view of her feeding the nestlings today! You can see that she perches on the nest, but it looks like she's using her tail for support almost like a woodpecker does. After she leaves, there's some fluttering in the nest, and she reappears momentarily, as though to make sure things are ok. Later, she feeds one of the baby hummers while she perches on the branch. From afternoon clips, there's another poop, plus more movement (and associated bulges) in the nest. About 3 minutes total.

All that bulging in the nest makes me wonder how (and whether) the nest can stay together. Perhaps using spiderwebs for structure makes it stretchy?

02 September 2011:

03 September 2011:

Today, I had a lot of interesting material, and despite serious editing, the video is a little long (4 min). In the feeding I captured this morning, I think you can see the baby hummers' eyes are open. After mom takes off, there's actual fluttering in the nest! It was really hot this afternoon and the baby hummers were panting a lot. With the wind, the nest kept moving and the footage (I guess that's an archaic expression) is sub-optimal. Still, I opted to include some video of an afternoon feeding after which Mother Hummer - astoundingly - decides to sit on the chicks. Nobody looks comfortable! She stayed about 5 minutes after that, and then took off.

04 September 2011:

You'll be happy to know that our little hummer family seems to have made it through the stormy night just fine. I imagine the branch was moving enough to give them quite an amusement park ride. This morning, the light wasn't very good for video, but it finally brightened up and I got some of the usual things - poops, wiggling and nest bulging, and two feedings. The second feeding is fun because one of the chicks has just pooped and seems to present its butt instead of its beak. Mother Hummer feeds the other chick, looks confused, and takes off. (Don't worry, she fed both later - my camera's battery ran down so I couldn't put that in.) About 3 minutes total.

06 September 2011:

I couldn't be here to get video yesterday, and was worried about what I'd find when I returned today, given the cold overnight temps. But the little hummer family seems fine, as you'll see. In today's video, Mother Hummer shows us her lovely, iridescent back while she feeds the chicks. There's some serious moving around in the nest afterward - I left it in, uncut, so you could see how the two chicks actually change positions in the nest. During some feedings, the baby nearest Mom seems to get more food, but swapping locations would tend to even the score. After the second feeding, Mother Hummer actually sits on the branch a while - the first time I've observed this behavior. It's windy again - the branch keeps moving, so the nest isn't always completely in view.

07 September 2011:

Obviously, *my* hummers are still around! As of yesterday, I definitely saw another female here, too (she got chased). Haven't seen a male in at least a week, but I rarely saw any this summer.

Due to the rainy and dark conditions, I had to take a lot of video to get anything worth seeing. Some of it is still a bit dark, so my apologies for that! There are nice wing exercises, some preening, a close-up of mom resting (on a branch close to the house), and two feedings. I've been thinking that the feedings seemed somewhat violent, and in the post-rain slippery conditions, mom actually loses her grip on the branch while trying to feed a chick. In the later feeding, I like the way she powers herself around.

08 September 2011:

The dark, rainy conditions didn't do wonders for recording video. Later, wet leaves obscured the nest much of the time, and played a part in the drama today...

This morning, I recorded one baby hummer peering out of the nest, some jostling, and a normal feeding. In the afternoon rain, one of the chicks got its head stuck above a wet leaf that was covering the nest (its sib was below). I included the next feeding (in spite of the fact that the mother is almost invisible behind the leaves) because it's clear the stuck chick is begging, but doesn't get fed. Sad to say, this seemed to be the pattern for the afternoon. Because it was often too dark and rainy to record video, I don't know if the mother figured out how to get food to the stuck chick or not. But late in the day, that baby seemed unresponsive when she returned and fed its sibling. About 4.5 minutes.

Not sure I can say, "enjoy" this time. Maybe "to be continued"...

09 September 2011:

What a difference a day makes! Today, the little hummers are both begging, preening, and peering out of the nest. I captured some video of wing exercises, too. But the Evil Leaf was back this afternoon, and I got some interesting material that I decided should be a separate feature. So, there are two links. Each video is about 3.5 minutes.

I'm glad the scope and I were back to recording for today!

This morning, the little hummers were active, looked rather grown-up, and seemed very curious. (When I got home yesterday afternoon, they were both peering down at me.) The material from this morning is more ordinary: preening, jostling, feedings, apparent foraging behavior(?), and the chicks gawking at a bee that goes by. (3.5 minutes)

But the dramatic moments came after noon. One baby hummer got between lobes of the Evil Leaf again, but seemed unperturbed. A little later, that chick was sitting partially on the top of the leaf, and eventually took its first steps out of the nest to perch on the leaf stem! There were wing exercises, and the wind made for some awkward movements. Mother Hummer seemed somewhat perplexed by the whole thing. Eventually, Baby Hummer attempted to move off the leaf stem and onto the branch (or back into the nest?), but...well, you'll have to see the video! (A little over 5 minutes.)

13 September 2011

After yesterday's drama, we're down to one little hummer in the nest. I didn't find any evidence of the other baby bird, and can't track the female well enough to know if she's feeding it somewhere else.

Today was windy, and the Evil Leaf drooped back down. Baby Hummer got stuck between the lobes, but Mom was up to the challenge this time. And so was Baby Hummer, as it turns out. I included a later feeding where the female pokes into the nest as though she expects to find another chick. Baby Hummer also did some serious wing exercises today. About 5 minutes long.

14 September 2011

Today, the remaining chick spent lots of time napping and preening. So much preening that watching it has made me feel very itchy. Anyway, I've compiled about 5.5 minutes of feedings (including one where Mother Hummer comes back to check on the chick), lots of moving around in the nest, poops, preening, what looks like foraging behavior (could there be bugs in the nest?), and definite wing action.

15 September 2011

I have to admit we ducked out most of today to go to the Hawk Watch, so I only recorded video this morning and late this afternoon. Still, I captured some interesting (and beautiful) moments. In two morning feedings, Mother Hummer is wonderfully lit as she perches on the branch to feed the chick. I'm fascinated by the way the two manage their "docking" procedure. Late this afternoon, the light wasn't wonderful, but Baby Hummer is poking around (and through!) the nest, doing some wing exercises, and preening. The Evil Leaf gets in the way of most everything, including another feeding. About 4 minutes.

16 September 2011

Today was graduation day for the second baby hummer. I got some great video of morning activity, including feedings that show the mother's iridescent feathers beautifully lit. The video is a bit long (5.5 minutes). There's a preening sequence, feedings, agitated movement, some sitting on the edge of the nest, and (incredibly) the departure.

I still can't believe I was lucky enough to record this departure. I am very grateful to Baby Hummer for choosing to leave on camera. In fact, I'm indebted to the whole Hummer Family for letting me spy on their lives these few weeks.

Cheryl Flory's email about a Praying Mantis attack on 12 September 2011, Petersburg, Michigan:

Allen: I just saw something that was surprising to me. Probably not to you. I was out in the garden doing some dead heading and kept hearing some flapping. I didn’t see anything except carpenter bees, so I thought it was them flying against the flowers. I kept clipping on down the row and heard it again. Then I saw that a large praying mantis had caught a humming bird!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bird was occasionally flapping, trying to get away. I decided not to take the time to go and get my camera, instead I tried to get the mantis to release the bird. It was difficult!! It took 3 or 4 swats with the clippers before it released the bird. I didn’t see the bird fly away, but I don’t see it on the ground either. The mantis is still there hunting. This is the 4th time I’ve seen the mantis in that garden. I hope it finds a mate and leaves some eggs. I never thought I would actually deprive a mantis of its meal, but decided the hummer ranked higher in my book. At least today.
